Above Par - National Golf Final Win
Kibworth professional golfer Kym Larratt and her amateur partner Trish Formoy recently won the National Final of the WPGA Lombard Trophy, held at Vila Sol Golf Resort on 21 and 22 September. This prestigious pro-am golf tournament has been running for 22 years and in 2016 a women’s edition was started alongside the men’s.
Kym’s father, Bob Larratt, had previously come third in this competition and had encouraged the ladies’ section at Kibworth Golf Club to get involved. Kym said, “Being a part of and winning the biggest pro-am tournament in Europe will be one of the most memorable moments in my golfing career”.
Trish said “To be honest, I didn’t realise how big an event this was when I played in the qualifying competition at our club, nor even when Kym and I won the regional final at Dunham Forest in Cheshire. Then we flew out to Portugal with 14 teams of men and six teams of women, all of whom had fought off others to get there and wanted to win. The adrenalin started to flow!”
Outwardly, they observed the spirit of fair-play and courtesy that the game requires, but inwardly they were both fired up. When a pair from Nene Park started coming back at them, they quietly agreed that they were not going to lose and made a series of birdies between them that left them four shots clear, with a nett 138 over the two rounds. It caused great excitement back home as supporters were following their progress on the PGA website and Whatsapp messages from the friends who came out with them.
The challenge now is for the ladies to defend the title next year and for the men to match it. The gauntlet has been thrown down!
