Hugh Collinson and Wistow Hall

Older readers of this newspaper will remember the striking sketches of local scenes contributed to the Chronicle by local artist and historian Hugh Collinson, who died in 2009. You might even have a copy of his 1981 book ‘Rural Rides in Historic Leicestershire’. In his book he writes ‘Wistow Hall stands beautifully in its park, as lovely a spot as any around Leicester’.

The Hall has seen many an historic event: King Charles spent the night here before the Battle of Naseby and during the Great War the Hall was used as a hospital for wounded and recuperating soldiers, ably run by Frances Fremantle, later the third Lady Cottesloe.
