Near miss for Bell Ringing Youth Team

Members of St Wilfrid’s bell ringers were privileged to attend the Ringing World National Youth contest held in the East End of London on Saturday 7 July; the event was a striking success for the Leicestershire team of ‘rising’ ringers who outperformed most of their rivals. The hot, dusty and deserted streets of London (it was England’s World Cup quarter-final match day) proved a workout for the team and roadies (parents and supporters) and a rewarding ringing excursion, ringing at St Magnus-the Martyr, St Mary le Bow on Cheapside, and St Anne Limehouse.

In only the second consecutive year of the Diocese submitting a team of ringers, all of whom have to be 18 or under, the team missed the final round by literally a stroke to finish the ‘best of the rest’. In total, 22 teams from around Great Britain competed in the contest, each taking part in one of two ‘heats’ which were in two church towers in the area. The best three teams from each heat then progressed to the final. Whilst coming fourth in their heat, and therefore just missing the final, Leicestershire’s performance proved to be better than two of the six finalists; it’s just the way the heats and finals worked out!

The Leicestershire team achieved a ‘B+’ after last year’s ‘C-’, demonstrating a step-change in performance over the year. With continued work the team might be able to improve yet again to achieve a place in the finals for 2019, which are to be held in Liverpool. The team has been ably led and mentored by Mark Pendry, who, with energy and commitment, has dedicated many weekend evenings, planning time and effort, nurturing the young ringers, all of whom are grateful to him for his perseverance. He is already preparing for the 2019 contest; “it’s coming home (to Leicestershire)!”
