News from Smeeton Westerby

Christmas Festivities started in Smeeton with our annual Christmas Fayre. Mulled wine flowed freely to give that festive glow as visitors viewed the stalls bearing lovely crafted glassware, candles, earrings, water colours and delicious artisan food on sale. With the Teddy Tombola and Santa entertaining the children, the grown ups were able to enjoy the other activities on offer. The Fayre was planned to be a Christmas get together rather than a fundraiser but at the end of the day, it was a bonus to add over £400 to the hall’s refurbishment pot.

A week later was our Walking Nativity. Despite the pouring rain, several families, and a pony carrying ‘Mary’, arrived at the meeting point to walk around the village searching for a place to stay. Of course, each house that we came to had ‘No Room’ until we arrived at the stables belonging to Mike and Philippa Britten. The stables had been decorated for the occasion, and after we all sang Christmas Carols amongst the animals, refreshments were served. By this point many more people had joined in the throng and it really proved to be a lovely celebration of Christmas, one I am sure will become an annual event.

The following night was our ‘Carols with Brass Concert’ held in Christ Church Smeeton. Once again, the church was filled to the rafters as we all listened to the nine lessons and the glorious soaring music to accompany the carols, played for us by the brilliant Odd Fellows Brass Band. With the Crib Service on Christmas Eve, we really felt that Christmas had come to Smeeton.
