Kilby Get To Know Your Neighbours’
On Thursday 25 April twenty six neighbours and friends listened to a fascinating talk given by Ruth Mays MBE and her colleague and friend, Steve Winter. Steve, who is a dog walker, brought along his dog, Tango, and told us about about training dogs to become guide dogs. Tango will be taken to Royal Leamington Spa where he will be trained to be a guide dog once he has left Steve’s family.
Leamington Spa has two centres, one where they breed the dogs and one where the dogs are trained. Not all the dogs are suitable but once they have passed the test they go on to give someone who is blind, or partially sighted, the freedom to go out and enjoy their lives. Ruth gave everyone a fascinating insight into her life with her guide dog, Ally.
The cost of breeding, training and keeping a dog for its lifetime as a Guide Dog costs about £56,000 and is funded by donations. Everyone was astonished to hear that such a large amount was needed. The evening raised £175 which will be given to The Guide Dogs For the Blind charity.
If you would like to learn more about Guide Dogs the Training Centre in Leamington Spa has open days when you can see, first hand, how the dogs are trained, it is well worth a visit.
Thanks go to Ruth and to Steve, along with Tango and Ally and all the people who supported us on the night.
