A wander up, down or along New Road in Beauchamp, especially in the second half of an afternoon, will be less of an experience following the passing of a Beauchamp nonagenarian.
With medium sized rucksack firmly secured between his shoulders, he would venture up the village. He had time to share what the media, be it national or community based, was proclaiming. There would always be a well-considered comment emerging from his reading, listening and viewing of the same.
Should you miss out on a New Road or High Street encounter, Kibworth Co-op would often provide a further opportunity. Having paid at the checkout, he would move to a clear area and adjust the contents of the backpack before commencing the return trip. Putin, Biden, Boris, PMQs, MPs of whatever party and of yesteryear; the lessons of history were all part of his resources along with a listening ear.
New Road, the High Street, the Co-op, Links Road, his family, especially Margaret; we shall all miss him but the ‘many mansions’ are richer for the spirit of Ken Savery.
