News From Smeeton Westerby Village Hall
The sound of fun and laughter emanated from our village hall on the evening of Saturday 23 April as quiz masters Chris and Monica Gibbins delivered our annual quiz. To begin the evening, and to feed ‘those little grey cells,’ a delicious supper was served before the fun began. It certainly was a fun evening! At the end of the night, the results were really close. In the end the team ‘It’s my round’ just managed to gain the victory and win the prize. To the great delight of the organising committee, we made another £500 for the British Red Cross Ukrainian Appeal. This, along with £370 raised at our Henry V111 evening and another £1,121 in donations collected by the Church Council means that, to date, we have now raised a total of £1,991 for this most urgent appeal. Thank you to everyone for your generosity.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Never sitting still, members of the Village Hall Committee are now planning our celebrations for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This will start with our village Bonfire Beacon, high on the hill at Bungalow Farm on Thursday 2 June being lit in the evening around 8.00pm. From this vantage point, as it gets dark, we are hoping we might see other beacons in the distance. We have delivered flyers to all of the houses in Smeeton which give details of all of the events.
On Saturday 4 June we will be holding our village BBQ on Philippa and Mike Britten’s field behind the church. The Parish Council have generously funded the purchase of two new village BBQs so that people can come and cook their own food and enjoy a sociable evening together. It should be a great celebration. We expect that on Sunday 5, people will be having their own street parties, which would be a lovely way to end the holiday.
We do have some other diary dates, which we hope will be of interest. On Sunday 3 July, we will be holding our annual ‘Brass on the Grass’ concert, when the Oddfellows Brass Band will once again entertain us on the allotments on Gumley Road, Smeeton. This is always one of the highlights of the year and definitely an event not to miss.
A few days later, we are holding a village Barn Dance in a genuine village barn. This will take place at Bill and Liz Vickers farm on Mill lane on Saturday 16 July. The band Bodger’s Mate has been booked, we will be having a Hog Roast (with a Vegan / Vegetarian option). So please, if you are interested, look out for further information in the next issue of The Chronicle.
