Action Fraud
Action Fraud have received numerous crime reports about fake text messages from the UK Government. These texts state that the recipient is eligible for an energy bill discount as part of the Energy Bill Support Scheme, beginning Saturday 1 October. The links in the texts or emails lead to genuine-looking websites, designed to steal your personal and financial information.
So how can you protect yourself? The energy bill discount allows for £400 off energy bills for households from October 2022. You should be aware that you do not need to apply for the scheme, and you will not be asked for your bank details. If you have spotted a suspicious text message, forward it to 7726 free of charge. Your provider can then investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban any malicious senders.
