Annual Charity Golf Day

On Friday 9 June we had our annual charity golf day at Kibworth Golf Club. This year we supported our local air ambulance. 19 teams of four competed, with a shot gun start at 1pm. We were lucky with the weather. Even if the golf wasn’t inspiring for some, they enjoyed a walk and friendly chat! All the teams gathered for a buffet meal afterwards. Prizes were handed out to the more skilful and competitive teams.

Congratulations to Tom Nimmo’s team who won with 89 points. We thank all the staff at the golf club for helping us with yet another successful fundraising event. We raised £2,800 for the air ambulance, towards the great work they do in saving lives in our region. The local service covers Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Rutland, covering 3850 square miles.

Club President

On Tuesday 26 June, Rotary Club President Terry Forryan handed over the Presidency to Robert Easthope. This took place formally at The Bell Inn, Burton Overy. Before handing over, the last pleasant official duty for Terry, as President, was to make three members of the Club ‘Paul Harris Fellows’. Paul Harris founded Rotary in Chicago in 1905 and the Paul Harris Fellowship scheme was started in 1957 in his memory. The award is in recognition of an outstanding contribution to Rotary in general and to the Kibworth & Fleckney Rotary Club in particular. Paul Kirby and Michael Pearce were founder members of the club, in 1987, and Michael Smith joined soon after.

Richard Darke Award

Our founder President was Richard Darke and in memory of Richard we started an award scheme of our own. The award is given, not necessarily based on academic achievement, but for a pupil’s overall contribution during their time at the school.

The Richard Darke Award is handed out to an individual in their last year of Primary School in Kibworth, Fleckney and Church Langton. It is also given to an outstanding pupil at the now Kibworth Mead Academy. This year the awards were presented by new President Robert Easthope, and assisted by Michael Pearce. The glowing testimonials, written by the teachers, say it all. There is a separate article in this month’s Chronicle on the awardees.

Bonfire & Fireworks Fundraiser

The Rotary Club is now in its fourth decade of community service. We look forward to our next major fundraising event, Bonfire & Fireworks on Saturday 4 November.
