News from Smeeton Westerby – Nov 2023

Here in Smeeton, we love this time of year as we begin to look forward to Christmas and what better way to start than to come to our very own Christmas Fayre on Saturday 18 November, 2 – 4pm in the village Hall. Santa and his elfin helper will be in their Grotto to give out pre-Christmas cheer and presents; there will be great stalls to look at and fun activities to try your hands at and, of course, delicious cakes and mince pies that can all be washed down with mulled wine or tea and coffee. We try to keep the prices as low as possible to make the afternoon accessible to all. So please come and join us!

Beaujolais Nouveau Evening

Then on Saturday 25 November, from 7pm, The Kings Head are hosting a Beaujolais Nouveau Evening. For £25 for two people, you will get a bottle of Cru Beaujolais Chénas, Fleurie or Villages, plus a sharing platter of either cheese or pork rillette, served with a baguette, pickles and butter. There will also be live music to make the evening go with a swing. Please ring 0116 279 2676 as booking is essential.

Next, on Friday 1 December at 6.30 for 6.45pm, in our village hall, Andrew Osborne will be entertaining us with a fascinating video and talk on his ‘Solo row of 3000 miles across the Atlantic’. This is in memory of his daughter and to raise awareness and support for ‘Cardiac Risk in the Young’. Tickets cost £15 and include a drink on arrival. After that,on Friday 8 December at 7.30pm, The Oddfellows Brass Band will be holding their Christmas Concert in Christ Church, Smeeton. This will be a fun-packed, entertaining night and includes mulled wine (or a non-alcoholic option) and mince pies. Tickets cost £10. Please ring Philippa on 0116 279 3841 to book your place.

On Sunday 17 December at 6.30pm, we head back to the church with the band for Carols with Brass. This is a traditional service of seven lessons and carols that tell the Christmas story. This service is always well-attended. There is no need to book, just come along and enjoy.

And finally, on Christmas Eve, we hold our family Crib service at 4pm. This is a time when we invite the children to dress up (if they would like to) and to help us act out the Christmas Story as it is narrated. They can either come already in costume or borrow some items from us. Again this is a very sweet and popular service – definitely one for your diaries!
