We offer coaching on Monday nights from 6.45pm to 7.45pm, followed by a club night (practice for all until 9.45pm). We anticipate most if not all ten of our beginner juniors joining the Junior League, adding to the three who joined last year, and three more “coachees” to join the Senior Leicestershire League (including two juniors!).
Successful teams
We entered two teams in the Rose Johnson Trophy. Drew and Callum Harbidge, James Robertson and Bob Palmer finished fifth, missing out on the semi-finals by only three points.
Tate Cordiner, Lennon Devlin and Noah Mckinder braved a first season in the Junior League, and we look forward to three more juniors joining them at the start of the next season in September. Dillon Kearney’s team won Division 1 in the Junior League.
Leicester Senior League
There was a good win for Fleckney 4 (F4) with Mike Miles winning all three matches. This was followed by an 8/2 loss for F3 but it was against the third-placed team in the League.
It was a tough night for F4 against Knighton Park’s twelfth team (KP12) with a 10/0 loss. Spirits were soon raised by a 7/3 win against Regent Sports 1 with Nick Wyche winning all his matches and great efforts from Mike Wilson and Lee Towers.
This was swiftly followed by another 10/0 loss for F2 against Nomads 1 despite some excellent rallies in the doubles match.
Hard work all round (and almost a draw) for F3 followed with Andy Haddon winning two of his matches and Drew Harbidge winning one of his. A great effort from Nick Wyche and Dillon Kearney secured a hard-fought draw for F1 against Desford 2, including a satisfying defeat for Dillon against our coach, Andy Wright!
The undoubted star of the night was Desford’s Alan Crowson. He took Dillon to 13/11 in the third set and gave Nick real problems. He also beat Bob. Alan later mentioned that he is 83 years old, giving all us hope for the future!
Jan Nix secured a couple of good wins for F4 against Leicestershire Tennis and Squash Club. Jeremy Bradley won all his matches. A fighting performance took place on Leap Year Day for Pete Wilson, Lee Towers and Jan Green but, alas, no points against KP12, although a draw against Winstanley Wizards 6 gave Fleckney 4 some well-earned points with wins for Jan Nix, Jeremy Bradley and Narendra Shah.
March began with a 7-3 defeat for Fleckney-3 against Nomads-1, a strong team but a point was still gained keeping the club afloat. We are a long way from relegation, although a loss for Fleckney-4 against Syston Casuals-5 was disappointing.
There was a great win the next day for Dillon Kearney, Andy Haddon and James Robertson against Winstanley Wizards-2, a maximum for Dillon and a tremendous effort from Andy. Fleckney-2 lost to Winstanley Wizards, but they complemented us on our team spirit. Syston-4 beat Fleckney-3 6/4, and Fleckney-1 won 3/2 against the second placed team. Later that week, Fleckney-2 lost to Leicester Electricity-2 10/0. Our players all had good moments but not enough of them!
There was a narrow defeat for F4 against Regent Sports-2, but two good wins for Naresh Shah. Fleckney-2 lost to Syston-4 10/0 (the second placed team).
An enjoyable night was had by all in Fleckney-3 against Knighton Park-11 despite a 10/0 scoreline. F4 had a tough night and lost 9/1 to the League leaders, Knighton Park-15.
Fleckney-3 lost to Syston-4, gaining a point. F2’s last match against KP9 was another loss at 2/8, but this was followed by a nice win over Winstanley Wizards-3 suggesting that Fleckney-1 may end up in third place, winning by 7/3 with a maximum for James Robertson.
It was good to get back to winning ways for Fleckney-3 with a 6/4 against Regents Sport-1 with splendid wins from Andy Haddon and the Harbidge brothers.
Junior Championships
Our inaugural Junior Championships took place on April 15 with 14 players entering, splendid progress being made by all. – Come join us!
Well Done Miriam!
On a personal note, I was blindsided and thrilled to receive Table Tennis England’s “Pride of Table Tennis” award for Leicestershire female volunteer of the year – really gratifying to see my work for the club recognised.
