New From Smeeton Westerby – September 2024
Summer in Smeeton Westerby brought with it some really enjoyable and successful events. Our CoCo (coffee and conversation) mornings on the third Wednesday of every month, 10.30am – 12noon, have proved to be very popular and it is so nice to welcome not only people from our village but surrounding villages too.
Then came our driving treasure hunt, organised by last year’s winner Kath Allen. This fun afternoon took us through the beautiful villages of Smeeton, Gumley, Laughton, Mowsley, Saddington and then back to Smeeton, finishing at The Kings Head where Edd and Andy were waiting for us with one of their excellent pop-up barbecues and of course lots of liquid refreshment.
Next came our village Evening BBQ on Philippa and Mike Britten’s field behind our church. Having set up a marquee, BBQs, tables, chairs and music, we waited as everyone started to arrive. It was a fabulous evening, with a lot of chatter, laughter and a real sense of village camaraderie.
Next, on Sunday 1 September, we celebrated the 175th anniversary of the consecration of Christ Church. The Archdeacon of Leicester was in attendance and gave an excellent sermon at our morning service. Having recently had the church redecorated, the gates only painted a few days previously and beautiful flower displays in the church, the whole place looked lovely. Here’s to another 175yrs!
Also, throughout the summer, The Kings Head put on a series of excellent events that included a charity Classic Car Show, themed supper nights, charity quizzes, jazz nights and a beer festival. As you can see there is a lot happening in Smeeton!
