About Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Award

The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize is an annual event that celebrates excellence in drawing and its importance in the contemporary art scene.

Formerly known as the Jerwood Drawing Prize, it aims to highlight the role of drawing as a medium of creative expression, technical skill, and conceptual development.

This year, the Working Drawing Award specifically focuses on the role of drawing in the creative process, emphasising how it can be an integral part of an artwork’s development rather than merely a finished product.

About ‘Riders in Black’

Riders in Black is a piece that reflects one of Maxine’s regular themes of movement, but this time exploring the space that black paper adds to a piece. Often, her drawings and finished works are a juxtaposition between the colourful subjects and the white paper, where the white space is just as important as the subject itself.

Getting the balance right between these elements is the challenge. Working with black paper and pastel offers a drama which comes with working ‘from dark to light.

Drawing a line

Participating in the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize has been an enriching experience for Maxine who is excited to see how the dialogue around drawing continues to evolve.

I felt a sense of camaraderie with my fellow artists. We were united by our passion for drawing and our desire to push the boundaries of our craft.’

Each artist approached their subjects in personal, touching ways. Often using the same materials, charcoal, graphite, ink, pastel on paper. Others using materials that challenge our perception and raising the question, ‘What is drawing?’ An essential question in this digital age.
