Kibworth Mead Academy students have come back from the summer holidays with a really positive attitude. They have collectively achieved over 68,000 reward points for demonstrating our values of work hard, be kind and be proud. Which bodes really well for the school year.

Year 11 in particular have impressed us with their hard work and positive attitude. Record breaking numbers have attended the nearly 20 revision sessions on offer each week. Tutor times have been a whirlwind of revision timetable planning as students have planned each day leading up to their November mock exams. Our mantra has been the old Mars slogan of getting a balance of work rest and play. We are proud to see so many Year 11 also engaged in sporting and other activities.

A variety of clubs

Our Year Seven continue to impress us with how well they have settled into secondary school life. They have made the most of every opportunity, from sports fixtures to band practice, to library helpers and Warhammer club. In Gardening club an army of welly-clad young people have been harvesting our sunflowers and preparing our raised beds for what will be a busy spring growing season. Our newest clubs, Programming club and Creative writing club, have been particularly popular with our youngest members of the KMA family.

Learning about the Holocaust

Last month, a group of Y10 and Y11 students visited Poland to learn more about the Jewish experience during the Second World War. More specifically, they learnt about the Holocaust. We are very proud of the manner in which our students conducted themselves while learning about harrowing details of this period. Not only did they visit Auschwitz, they also had the privilege of meeting a Holocaust survivor. Our students were deeply moved after hearing first-hand testimony from a survivor who spoke to us with such dignity.

Open evening success

Last month we hosted our Year Six Open Evening. We were overwhelmed with the numbers of visitors keen to see what KMA has to offer. Both talks sold out of tickets over two weeks before the event. We had over 100 KMA students keen to act as student ambassadors and helpers, to share their pride in their school. Since Open Evening we have run school tours most days. The positive feedback that we are getting from the local community is really heartening.

Fish in Schools Hero

In other news, our Food Department, in conjunction with the Kibworth Fish Bar, have recently been involved in the Fish in Schools Hero programme. This programme aims to ensure that every child gets a chance to prepare, cook and eat fish before they leave school. Other learning includes fish type and species, sustainability, healthy eating and nutrition, cuisines from around the world, and recipe development. The requirement for the project was that the fish had to be delivered to and collected from your local chippy. This is a great way to form connections and work collaboratively with a local business.

So, in June the Kibworth Fish Bar took delivery of 48 frozen hake fillets for us. Due to school trips over the last couple of weeks of term, we stored the fish in our freezer for use in the new school year. Year 11 cooked us up a treat when given the task to plan, prepare and cook homemade fish cakes, oven cooked chunky chips and a homemade tartare sauce. They were also given the challenge of presenting the dish in an attractive way. They did an amazing job with five-star reviews.
