What’s Going On? – Oct 2024

What's Going On?

We start this month with a look at some of our local hostelries:

The Queen’s Head at Saddington is reopening with new managers, Erik and Freya. The opening date is Saturday 26 October. We wish them well. It is an Everards-owned pub.

The Kings Head in Smeeton Westerby has an entry in the Good Beer Guide 2025. Well done, Edd and Andy. Cheers!

The Baker's Arms Thorpe Langton
The Baker’s Arms, Thorpe Langton

The rather lovely The Bakers Arms in Thorpe Langton has now ceased to be. The press release says that Kate and Tim Hubbard decided not to renew the lease on the property which has expired. They are off to enjoy some leisure time together. We wish them well.

The refurbished The Langton Arms in Church Langton was a lovely, lively open space with sunshine beaming down through the skylights when we visited for lunch a week ago.

Sad to see the landmark public house known as the Coach and Horses, a Heineken Star and Bars, owned and recently managed by The Boathouse Group has closed its doors, again. The Coach and Horse is a former 18th century Coaching Inn and has been a Grade II listed building since 23 January 1986.

Upgrades

Not to be outstripped by Kibworth Community Library’s new front door and following a complete facelift to Somerby Pharmacy, which also included a new secure door, Kibworth Village Hall has a new entrance light – a glass panel above the door with No 15. This certainly makes the interior foyer brighter.

The Welcome Kitchen is due to recommence its operations on Monday 28 October at 12 noon

Smeeton Westerby

Traffic Calming lights have been installed at the entrances to the village. These are solar powered and are very effective in telling you your speed!

Kibworth Lake

Really enjoying the memes on the Facebook page regarding the ‘Kibworth Lake’ on the new bridge close to the Grammar School Hall. AMCO – Network Rail’s accomplices – have been tasked with resolving the problem and have contacted Harborough District Council with plans on how the water should be dealt with. Unfortunately the drains in the nearby road are higher than the water so the solution is a little more complicated. We will see if it is finally resolved in the week beginning October 14.

Kings Norton Church under scaffolding

Kings Norton Church

It is sad to see the church at Kings Norton under a pile of scaffolding. Let’s hope the remedial work doesn’t take too long as this is one of Leicestershire’s most beautiful structures.
