By the time you read this, our Christmas musical, ‘Holly Jolly Saves Christmas’ will have been performed and put to bed. It proved to be a huge success and, for anyone who came to see it, catapulted them into the true and magical spirit of Christmas.
Owen Brooks of HFM, wrote a review for us, part of which you will find below.
‘I had the pleasure of going to the opening night of, ‘Holly Jolly Saves Christmas’ performed by Main Stage Theatre Company in Kibworth Grammar School Hall/Kibworth Community Hub.
This original festive production was written and directed by Ella Wright who also took on one of the leading roles, playing Holly Jolly, a new elf on the shelf.
The story centres around a family who have, quite simply, lost the spirit of Christmas (Zara Kent, John Morton and Aimee Boden playing mum, dad and their daughter). However, once the family’s elf on the shelf appears, only visible to Ann-Marie the daughter, things get quite amusingly chaotic, causing the dad to cancel Christmas.
It is then up to Holly Jolly to find a way to save it. She is aided and abetted by a number of very keen elves who work under the ‘parentship’ of Grandpappi Elf played by Martyn Wyburn. Is she successful? I don’t want to give the story away, but we all like a happy ending, don’t we? Janet Gilbert was the narrator who guided us through the story, and also encouraged the audience to participate whenever possible.
Festive shows of this kind should always be a lot of fun and this show was certainly that. They should also be suitable family viewing and, in this case, the audience was made up of people both young and, well, not so young, all supporting and cheering on the cast. Such shows should also have catchy and memorable songs and a sprinkling of company dancing. They had both of these too!! The two sets depicted the family home and the very lavish Santa’s workshop. With the slick scene changes, and the expert sound and lighting, the show definitely had a professional touch. Add to that the extensive bar, it proved to be a really good night.
Will I be looking out for future productions by Main Stage? Certainly. Well done to everyone involved, both on and off stage, and congratulations on ‘Saving Christmas!’
