Kibworth and Smeeton Nature Project

We’re pleased to announce that the team has completed the flood management phase of the Smeeton Westerby nature project. We are now ready to plant 2000 small tree whips (30-50cm) at this inspiring and beautiful site in Smeeton Westerby. The Langton Brook hosts the site, off the footpath running from Debdale Lane. Location: What3Words ///airstrip.instance.rotations.

Thanks to wonderful landowners at the Smeeton Westerby Nature Project, this is the first of many natural flood management schemes, instigated by Harborough Woodland, that are needed in the upper River Welland catchment. Needed to slow the flow, improve river quality, reduce flooding and create important habitat of wildlife. Additionally, the footpath through part of it allows you to see your trees grow next to the Langton Brook. The rewiggling of the straightened brook and restoration was managed by East Mercia River Trust (EMRT) and funded by Environment Agency, Anglian Water, IMF Investors and Harborough District Council.

The tree planting event will take place on Saturday 14 December. If you would like to sign up to volunteer please visit our webpage or email.

Please bring gardening gloves as well as a spade and a snack. It’s good fun for all ages. No experience needed as our Harborough Woodland team will provide training and support.

Flower Bulbs

If you would like to contribute to the project beyond offering your time, please bring along some flower bulbs to plant on the day as well. We’d like to keep the woodland looking wild, so bulbs such as snowdrops, bluebells, daffodils, wild garlic, fritillaria, Puschkinia would be ideal. You can also buy a selection of ‘Woodland bulbs’ for ease.

We look forward to seeing many of you there!
