Wine Note
Comte de Senneval Champagne Brut NV (Lidl £13.99) Fizz for Christmas is a must. But what to buy?
If it must be champagne but you don’t want to spend a lot, try this bottle.
It’s fresh, fizzy, and lemony, and the nose has the appropriate hints of brioche. It’s not great but it’s got the magic name on the label and, for champagne, it’s cheap. The wine is made by Maison Burtin, a large champagne house without the huge marketing budget of the famous producers. That, combined with Lidl’s buying power, results in the reasonable price.
But who is the Comte de Senneval?
There’s no such person; it’s a name dreamt up by Lidl.
If you don’t insist on Champagne, you have alternatives:
Prosecco? Not special enough – it’s everywhere, all the time.
Cava? Lacks image and you need magic …
Cremant? The best alternative; it’s French, it’s made in the same way as Champagne and it’s cheaper.
English sparkling wine? Excellent quality but at a price.
Whatever you drink, have a Sparkling Christmas.
