Wine Notes
Co-op Irresistible Greek Assyrtiko 2023 (Coop £10.20).
What does Dry January mean to you? Does it involve no wine at all, low alcohol wine. Or do you perhaps allow yourself a little dry white wine on “drinking days”?
This bottle will suit those who find themselves in the third category. Assyrtiko is a high quality Greek white grape, famous for its role in the wines of the island of Santorini. These now cost upwards of £25 a bottle so buyers in the UK have been looking elsewhere for value. This example, from Macedonia, is made by Kir-Yianni, a family winery. Very good value for a fraction over £10.
It’s intense, mineral and has the refreshing acidity typical of Assyrtiko. If you like Chablis, you’ll like this.
According to the Coop it’s the “first Greek winery to join International Wineries for Climate action, supporting the building of wildlife corridors.”
So you can drink it with a clear conscience in January knowing that you’re helping to save the world.
