Leicester & District Ramblers

The Leicester & District Ramblers, who currently have over 400 members, have just published their programme of walks for the first six months of 2025. This is their most comprehensive programme ever and comprises about 175 walks. They have a guided walk on every day of the week apart from Monday. The walks vary from a leisurely 4 mile stroll, up to a strenuous 15 mile hike.

Their success is due to the hard work of a very capable committee. Alongside eight walk organisers, who are ably supported by many walk leaders. The most popular events are the Tuesday and Thursday morning walks which invariably include a social event of a pub lunch.

One of the many aims of the ramblers is to keep the footpaths open. As well as reporting problems with stiles and footbridges.

At the recent AGM their Chairman, Mike Goodrich, stated that he believed that the Leicester group was the most active in the UK. As well as having the best website, thanks to the skill of their webmaster, Mel Smith. Mike is one of several octogenarians in the group and started walking when he retired due to worries about becoming overweight. He gave a short presentation detailing the exploits of Bal Mistry, who had recently trekked to Everest Base Camp.
