Self-Care Vs Self-Love: What’s the Difference and Why Does It Matter?

At Kibworth Osteopaths and Pilates, we focus on holistic health – nurturing your mind, body, and spirit.
But have you ever thought about the difference between self-care and self-love and how this distinction can transform how you care for yourself?
The Difference Between Self-Care and Self-Love
In our busy lives, we often care for others – partners, children, friends. But when was the last time you asked yourself, How am I caring for myself?
If you don’t nurture yourself with self-care and self-love, you risk burnout, making it harder to give your best to others.
- Self-care is the ‘external work’ of maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves concrete actions like exercising, eating well, and getting enough sleep.
- Self-love is inwardly listening to your needs and treating yourself with kindness. It might mean taking a break, enjoying a walk, or simply checking in with yourself.
Why Does This Matter to an Osteopath?
As an Osteopath, my goal is to treat physical symptoms and empower you to take control of your health. This includes recognising that self-care starts with believing you are worthy of love and attention.
Each morning, I ask myself, “How do I feel today? What do I need?” Sometimes, it’s stillness, laughter, and sometimes a good book and coffee. Tuning in to my needs helps me practise both self-care and self-love.
Simple Self-Care Practices
Self-care doesn’t need to be overwhelming. It’s personal and looks different for everyone. For me, it’s about caring for the whole body – not just bones and muscles, but mental and emotional health.
Examples of self-care include:
- Exercise (walking, stretching, yoga)
- Staying hydrated
- Getting enough sleep
- Eating balanced meals
- Checking in with your mental health (journaling, talking to a friend)
Self-care isn’t about perfection. Start small and build gradually. Be patient with yourself.
Be Kind to Yourself
Change takes time, and things won’t always go as planned. Practice self-love in the form of self-compassion—tomorrow is a new day to try again. The impact of your self-care will ripple out to others, inspiring those around you—your children, friends, or colleagues.
Final Thoughts: Your Health Matters
Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive. A simple walk can connect you with nature and improve your physical and mental health.
