New Firefighter – Cameron Cavan
As part of our ongoing series introducing Kibworth’s On-Call crew, we spotlight another team member, Firefighter Cameron Cavan. Read Cam’s insights on his experience and what inspired him to join the crew.
“Hi Cam, thanks for chatting with us and sharing your experience as a firefighter. To start, we’ll ask a few general questions before learning what inspired you to join the Kibworth On-Call team.”
“Firstly, what is your name? My name is Cameron Cavan.”
“And how long have you lived in Kibworth, and what do you like most about the area?”
“I moved to the area in September 2023. After living in a rural village with energetic dogs, I needed a place with ample space for long walks and nearby amenities. Market Harborough, just ten minutes away, offers everything I need. The community here is friendly and supportive.”
“How long have you been part of the on-call crew at Kibworth Fire Station?”
“I joined last year and started training in August 2024. Though I’m not finished yet, I’m a Safe-to-Ride Supernumerary, allowing me to provide on-call firefighter cover with restricted duties until I complete my training.”
“What was your motivation for becoming an on-call firefighter?”
“I’ve been in construction since school and enjoy hands-on roles with variety. When I moved and realised I could be an on-call firefighter, I applied. It’s a job that suits me, allows me to contribute to community safety, and offers constant learning and development. I love the challenge of learning new things and working with like-minded people.
The biggest challenge is balancing practical training, theoretical online learning, station duties, and keeping everything running smoothly. I’ve had to make sacrifices, but I wouldn’t regret I”
If you’re interested in becoming an on-call firefighter, be prepared to make sacrifices and commit to regular training. Having supportive family and friends helps too. The service holds ‘Have a Go Days’ regularly to give you a real idea of what it’s like.
