Fleckney & Kibworth Running Club – A look back at 2020
Much like every other Club and Society we will be looking back at 2020 mainly as a year to forget, but as a Running Club we made the best of it with a number of virtual events to keep members active.
Although it seems a distant memory now, we did actually take part in a handful of events before the first Lockdown in March. A couple of muddy cross country runs and two Leicestershire Road Running League races took place. The highlight of these came as we were able to host the ever popular Kibworth 6 Race in early March. 12 Runners represented the club with many more helping out as Marshalls, plus the vital task of running the tea and cake stand which raised over £200 for the local Air Ambulance charity.
January 2020
January also saw the beginning of a very popular Couch to 5k program with over 20 participants in the early weeks. As is often the case with New Year fitness groups the numbers did drop over the ten week course, but there was still a good turnout at the Graduation Parkrun in Market Harborough, just before this event was also put on hold.
First Lockdown
With the first lockdown in place we were all limited to running on our own, but throughout the year we have organised a number of virtual events, encouraging people to get out and about locally, with a competitive edge. Events involved running for a set time or distance, with runners of all ability levels allocated to Teams, leading to some very close fought affairs, where every yard or second counted.
Virtual Running
Many runners also joined in the virtual Leicestershire Road Running League with a variety of distances on offer. The Leicester Marathon and Half Marathon was replaced with a Run The World challenge, which saw 23 club members rack up over 2,000km and help raise much needed funds for LOROS in the process.
Solo Runs
It hasn’t all been about solo runs, we were able to run in small groups for several months throughout the summer, and made good use of the local countryside rather than just running in the villages. Some members also took part in a range of low key events with limited numbers as part of the Leicestershire Multi Terrain League.
As we enter 2021 in a new lockdown, events for the first few months are understandably already being pushed back to later in the year.
