Kibworth Art Lovers’ Society
Our 2019 programme began with a talk and demonstration by local artist Sarah Luke on Fused Glass work. Sarah has always had an interest in creative, artistic work which began with taking art at school and was followed up by studying at Charles Keene College (now Leicester College). However, her early career as a photographer’s studio assistant – which took her all around the country setting up photo shoots – was cut short when her employer’s business folded; as a matter of expediency Sarah went to work in a betting shop. Family life followed, and her artistic endeavours were put on hold, although she still retained an interest in creative arts. Even the demands of caring for three young grandchildren did not deter her from artistic interests.
An enforced period of recuperation following serious illness in later life led Sarah to take an interest in fused glass work, since when she has never looked back. She learnt the differing types of sheet glass, tools for handling and cutting glass safely, and technical aspects of firing in a purpose-built oven, as well as using internet media to publicise her work. She is a member of Harborough Artists Cluster, and uses these skills to publicise their annual open studios events in and around the town.
Sarah produces delightful jewellery, plates, bowls and wall- and window-hangings, many of which are influenced by her love of the sea and of flowers. She even recycles offcuts by integrating small pieces with attractive line drawings as greetings cards. Having started by borrowing a tutor’s oven, she now owns two ovens to accommodate varying sizes of her work. Sarah continues to improve her glasswork techniques by attending workshops around the country, and now also teaches at No. 56 High Street, Kibworth and the Leicestershire Craft Centre in Market Harborough.
On Tuesday 26 February our meeting will be a demonstration of Oil Painting by Mark Hancock. Meetings are held in St Wilfrid’s Church Hall starting at 7.30pm; all are welcome.
