Wine Note – May 22
2021 Lateral Chardonnay D.O. Valle Central, Chile (Tesco £3.99)
Can you buy decent wine for less than a fiver? Yes, there are several good buys around.
But what about drinkable wine for less than £4?
This remarkably cheap bottle of chardonnay from Chile contains wine that’s dry and fruity with some tropical fruit notes. That’s quite an achievement at this price point. It was a star performer at the recent u3a tasting.
It’s from Chile’s hot flat central valley but still has balancing acidity.
There’s no indication of the producer’s name, just a reference to the importer, Kingsland Drinks, “a premier independent UK supplier of wine and spirits specialising in providing a complete category solution.”
Their customers include Morrisons, Tesco, Coop, Majestic, M&S, Booths and Waitrose.
It’s not the only wine in the range and the chardonnay is not even the cheapest; you can buy a Cabernet Sauvignon for just £3.89.
Get to Tesco quickly. Bargain buys like this surely won’t stay on the shelves for long.
