News from Smeeton Westerby
What a glorious summer we have all had. The weather was certainly kind for our last two village events, Brass on the Grass and the Barn Dance. Once again the former was one of the highlights in our Smeeton social calendar. So many people, both locally and from further afield, joined us to listen as The Oddfellows Brass Band entertained us once again. With refreshments being served, the evening proved to be a resounding success. All of the donations going to GEMS in memory of Kelvin Capell, a much loved member of our community.
Never sitting still, two weeks later, the village hall committee organised our Barn Dance with The James Joyce Ceilidh Band. The dance was held in a beautifully decorated barn at Newstead Farm, thanks to the generosity of the Vickers family. A hog roast, purchased from Bridge 67, was served followed by some delicious, donated desserts. At the end of the evening, when everyone had danced themselves silly, James, the band leader, said that he had enjoyed himself so much, he couldn’t wait to come back again. He said they often struggle to persuade people to dance. In our case, he struggled to get us to sit down and have a rest!
Dates for your diaries:
Harvest Celebration – Friday 30 September in the village hall – 7 for 7.30pm. There will be a hot supper served with delicious puddings. After which our very own adventurer, Matthew Hopkinson, will regale us with tales and interesting facts about his latest expedition to Alta Via in the Dolomites. It should be a really fun evening. To reserve your place, (£12 per person and we ask that you bring your own drinks and glasses) please ring Philippa on 0116 2793841
Family Harvest Festival – Sunday 2 October at 10am Christ Church
It is always so special to see children bringing in gifts to the Harvest service, whether just one item or several placed in a box that they have decorated. But of course, as well as families, we welcome everyone to this special service. There will be the opportunity to chat and catch up with friends over refreshments at the end.
Christmas Fayre – Saturday 26 November 2-4.30pm in the village hall
Although it is a little early to advertise this, we do still have some tables to rent for £10. So if you have something you would like to sell, please ring Janet on 07950 409610 for more details. Also, one of our most loved stalls is our Teddy (soft toy) tombola, so again please ring Janet if you have any good, clean soft toys that need a new home.
