Steve Piggott Principal writes:
“I am delighted to have taken on the role of Principal of Kibworth Mead Academy this autumn. I am very keen to get to know our wider Kibworth community, as well as parents and carers.
By way of introduction, I bring to Kibworth over two decades of experience working within secondary education. This includes four years as the Principal of Fullhurst Community College, a successful secondary school in Leicester City. During my time at Fullhurst, the success of the school was recognised nationally by the Department for Education. It was also shortlisted nationally for the School of the Year Award.
My aim is to bring the same level of rigour and success to Kibworth Mead Academy. Fortunately I’m building on solid foundations, with strong support from The Mead Educational Trust.
This summer our students received some of their best GCSE results ever. The staff here are incredibly proud of what they have achieved. The students‘ resilience and tenacity has been exceptional considering the last two years of disruption due to the pandemic.
There were many success stories, including one student who attained 13 grade 9s and one grade 8. Overall nearly 20 percent of our students achieved at least one grade 9.
We also had two sets of twins taking their GCSE examinations. Between them they achieved 42 grades, including 17 grade 9s, 16 grade 8s, 5 grade 7s and two level 2 distinctions.
While it is still early in the new term, I have been very pleased to see how hardworking, kind, and proud the vast majority of students are.
Students and Staff respond well to changes
I have been particularly impressed with how well students and staff have responded to changes we have made. These are part of our school improvement plan designed to address the areas for improvement identified in the recent Ofsted inspection.
These changes – such a new rewards policy, improvements to the building, adjustments to the lunch time arrangements – build upon the successful changes introduced last Easter, such as the behaviour policy, which were already starting to have a positive impact.
From my experience of being a teacher for over 20 years, I know that a successful and happy school depends on all of us working together.
I am looking forward to meeting members of our wider community. I hope that we will be able to welcome many of you into the school this year to see the improvements we are planning.
Many of our facilities including the sports hall, dance studio and sports pitches are available for community bookings. I hope you will take advantage of all the school has to offer.
We are also installing a new gym and making plans to open the school on Friday evenings and Saturdays for activities for young people. I will keep you updated on plans and progress through regular articles in this excellent publication. “
