The wonder of worms!
If you are of a certain age, I wonder if you remember the radio programme ‘Round the Horne’, first heard in the 1960s on Sunday afternoons and now back on BBC Sounds. A frequent catch phrase uttered by Kenneth Williams was ‘The answer lies in the soil’ in a broad country brogue. How right he proved to be!
It came to mind when I was recently reading again about the wonder of worms. The Soil Association has helpful information about them: link.

I saw this article on Facebook Harborough Go Green, our MP, Neil O’Brien’s idea, and set up with the help of his excellent former assistant, Narinder Singh. It’s a great help for information and ideas about how to live more sustainably, and also about the latest tree plantings to reduce the serious risk of flooding in our area, an issue Harborough Woodland are busily addressing.
Why mention worms now? Well, there is another COP, Conference of the Parties, Dec 7th to the 19th Dec, number 15, In Montreal, hosted by China, to try and come up with agreed actions to protect our plant life and fungi, not to mention worms which are all in great decline, as you are probably aware.
Finally, words of wisdom by Charles Darwin –
“It is a marvellous reflection that the whole expanse has passed, and will again pass, every few years, through the bodies of worms. The plough is one of the most ancient and most valuable of man’s inventions; but long before he existed the land was in fact regularly ploughed, and still continues to be thus ploughed, by earthworms. It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these creatures.”
