News from Smeeton Westerby – May 2023
In Smeeton Westerby, we celebrated the King’s Coronation in style. From flags flying throughout the village to our special church service. Plus the Coronation BBQ, and Big Community Help out, (litter picking along the roads that enter our village). It was all rounded off with a ‘bring your own’ picnic!
The BBQ was held in the village hall garden. It was to say a big thank you to all of the residents who, over the years, have supported the events laid on by the village hall committee. So it was free bangers, burgers, buns, beer and bubbles! In addition, we served a side salad as well as Pimms! Despite the intermittent showers, it proved to be a great success with over 80 people attending. The litter picking also proved to be really popular, especially with the children. Several sacks of rubbish were collected using our new litter pickers and bags, supplied by the parish council.
Of course, if anyone felt a little thirsty, The Kings Head, under the new ownership of Edd Brown and Andy Smith, were holding a Beer Fest. To get into the spirit of things, they had even erected a very fine new sign for the occasion, of King Charles III himself!
On Saturday 22 April, actor, entertainer and raconteur, Tony Harris, came to our village hall to entertain us in his role of Sherlock Holmes. As always, supper was served before the entertainment began. When Tony took to the stage, he was funny, knowledgeable and so wonderfully entertaining that we are already looking to inviting him back to play the role of Winston Churchill.
