Duggie’s Ramblings – Oct 24

Duggie's Ramblings

I wonder who the renowned historian, Anthony Seldon, is talking about?

(Ten things a prime minister should do-or not do)

You can’t become Prime Minister and not be deadly serious. It is the most incredible honour to be Prime Minister and you can’t just jape around and think that everyone is at your famous private school or Oxford University pulling jokes. It is just not respectful to the country and that ultimately saw her/him down.

A serious, thoughtful man whom I had never heard of till recently, was Sir George William (born on October 11) He was one of seven sons born to a Somerset farming family and at the age of 16 he moved to London.

From his own drapers shop in London he founded 180 years ago, (this year 2024) the world famous YMCA. The song by The Village People came over 100 plus years later. There is a YMCA hostel in Leicester for young people and many other hostels for young women which include visitors from overseas (one is opposite the British Museum in London).

Thinking of overseas, when I was a boy waiting on Southend pier for the crossing to Margate I asked a fellow passenger – he had been a seafarer as a career around the world – which country he would like to revisit and without hesitation, he said Japan.
