Illston on the Hill WI
Illston on the Hill WI invited John to speak and demonstrate the hula hooping. This is a talent he famously showcased on ITV’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’! Hula hooping has an intriguing history. It dates back to the 14th century when people would use woven branches to create hoops for play and exercise. Today, we’ve come a long way enjoying modern hoops made from lightweight plastic or bamboo that cater to various skill levels and styles.
The hula hoop craze we see today originated in the USA. During a period of overproduction, manufacturers found themselves with an excess of hoops and decided to introduce them to the UK market. What began as a commercial opportunity quickly transformed into a fun and engaging pastime for people of all ages, promoting both fitness and enjoyment.
When I first approached the hoop, I assumed that using a small one would be easier. However I was pleasantly surprised to discover that larger hoops are actually much easier to manage. A few members had the opportunity to try, with varying results. Perhaps not the evening we expected.
As the evening drew to a close we gathered for some scrumptious refreshments. A delightful way to end.
Just a reminder about our Christmas Coffee morning on Saturday 23 November, 10am –1pm in Illston village hall. Lots of stalls and bacon butties. In aid of Alzheimer’s Society. Do come and support us, this is a shocking disease and we all know someone suffering from it.
