Hi Kevin, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today and for sharing your insights into the life of an On Call Firefighter. We’ll begin with some general questions. Before diving into your motivations for joining the Kibworth On Call Team.
Firstly, how long have you lived in Kibworth and what do you like most about the area?
I have lived in Kibworth since 2019. I like the area for many reasons, including the people and the friends we have made since moving here. The countryside is great and provides lots of nice walks with my dog.
How long have you been part of the On Call Crew at Kibworth Fire Station?
I became a ‘Wholetime Firefighter’ in 2008 and joined the On-Call Section at Kibworth when I moved back to the area in 2019.
What was your motivation for becoming an On Call Firefighter?
My motivation was that the role provided me with the chance to meet new people in the area but mostly to help protect the area I live in. The On-Call Section is vital to areas like Kibworth, so to be a part of it and to make a difference, is great.
What do you most enjoy about the job
Being able to help people is the answer most firefighters give, and that’s the same for me. The job has many challenges and being able to work through those is a nice feeling.
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced in the role?
The challenge to perform my full-time role within the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service and then also provide additional cover for Kibworth On-Call during my days off. I have a young family so time is probably the biggest issue, but I make it work.
Do you have any advice to offer someone that is interested in becoming an On Call Firefighter?
My advice would be to come and speak to us at the station. The job isn’t for everybody, but come and speak to the crew and we can answer any questions or concerns you may have, or confirm whether you would be ideal for the role. The On-Call Section relies on the local community, the fire engine can’t respond to incidents if we don’t have enough firefighters. If the interest is there, then you should go for it!
