News from Smeeton Westerby – Oct ’24

We are really pleased to announce that by the time you read this, we will have refurbished the front of our village hall. The wall outside will have been repointed and the drive way laid with resin bound stone. This certainly has smartened everything up and we are delighted with the result.

Another wonderful treat for us has been receiving a beautiful ‘Poppy Cascade’. This was handmade by the very talented members of the Kibworth and Smeeton WI. On Monday 28 October, they will be positioning it around our pulpit in Christ Church in time for remembrance day. So as the church is always open during the day, please do pay us a visit to see it in situ. Our thanks go to everyone involved.

Dates for the diary

Our Village Hall

Just a reminder that our Christmas Fayre is going to be held on Saturday 30 November, 2 – 4.30pm. As always, Father Christmas will be taking time out of his busy schedule to visit us and meet with the children in his grotto. Of course, he will be handing out gifts to all of those boys and girls who have been really good this year! Alongside this, we have several stalls and fun activities. These include our Teddy Tombola, raffle, mulled wine and mince pies etc, etc. If you have any new gifts that you could donate to us or any clean soft toys we would be delighted. Please ring Janet on 07950 409 610 to arrange collection.

The King’s Head

Wednesday 6 November will be the next ‘Jazz Club’ evening. These have been a great success so far, with a selection of jazz music including standards, and some more modern pieces, played by a changing roster of local musicians. Guest floor spots are also available to any players interested. Hot snacks are available on the night.

Then on Wednesday 27 November, there will also be a cheese and wine evening to celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day. The run isn’t as fast as it used to be!

They are also now taking bookings for Christmas food. Whether a buffet, or something simple, all the way up to a three or four course Christmas meal. Please contact Edd and Andy on 0116 279 2676 for more information. Oh yes, and watch out for a Christmas charity quiz in early December!

Christ Church

The Tudor choir will be performing a sung Evensong on Sunday 17 November at 6.30pm in Christ Church. What with the ‘Poppy Cascade’ and the church full of candles, this will be a beautiful event and one not to miss. Naturally, we will be serving refreshments at the end. There is no need to book, just turn up and enjoy.

Then the Kibworth Ladies Choir will be performing their Christmas Concert with festive songs and readings on Thursday 5 December. Tickets will be £10 and include mulled wine and mince pies. Please watch this space for how to book in the next Chronicle.
