How To Winter Well
Winter can be tough on both our physical and mental health. As a practitioner focused on the body and mental health, I encourage a balanced approach to wintering well.
Physically, many experience more pain and stiffness in the colder months. Muscles contract to retain warmth, which can increase discomfort. Despite the temptation to stay still, movement is crucial. Go for walks, even on chilly days, or do light indoor exercises. If you typically exercise outside, consider a winter gym membership or shift your routine to daytime for more natural light.
Invest in proper winter clothing—layers, hats, scarves, and gloves help you stay comfortable outdoors. Remember to maintain a balanced diet, indulge only occasionally, and stay hydrated, as your body still needs water despite sweating less.
Mentally, Winter can also be challenging, with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affecting many. If you’re struggling, reach out to a GP for support. Taking a “brain break” is also beneficial. I avoid mentally intensive tasks in winter but find joy in simple activities like cooking, reading, and crafting. This seasonal break helps refresh the mind.
The holidays, while joyful for some, can also feel overwhelming. If you’d rather rest, don’t hesitate to say no to events that don’t spark joy. Make time for what matters, whether festive gatherings or quiet evenings at home.
A few quick tips: wear bright colours on gloomy days to lift your spirits, plan meet-ups with friends, or call them if you can’t meet in person, and keep up with your physical routine. Acts of kindness, even small ones like picking up litter, can create a warm, contagious positivity.
Embrace Winter with self-care and a mindful approach for a healthier season.
