The New Normal Cancer Support Group – November 2024

The group is coming up to its third birthday soon, so we thought it was time to share what we have been doing and what we have planned for the future.

Who are we?

The group was started by three friends, who through their own experiences, saw the need for a cancer support group local to South Leicestershire.

When and where is the group held?

We meet every third Wednesday of the month, from 7.30pm to 9pm, usually at Kibworth Cricket Club, but occasionally we meet elsewhere.

Is there a charge for the group?

We don’t charge for the group, although there is always a collection pot for any donations towards the running of the group. We offer free tea, coffee and most importantly, cake! This is usually kindly donated by the local community and is what many members look forward to!

Who can I expect to find at the group?

It’s fair to say that we are an eclectic bunch with different experiences of the world and cancer. Many of us have personal experiences of cancer and the treatments that go with it, others are partners, friends or family members of those that have cancer. Some of us are receiving ongoing treatment. Everyone is welcome,

What does the group offer?

Support mainly, but also fun and laughter, friendship, learning new skills, sharing experiences. Over the past few months we have painted pumpkins, built spaghetti and marshmallow towers, played bowls, made Christmas decorations, played bingo, (without all of the balls!), held quizzes, raffles and a cheese & pudding night, to name but a few. We have had talks from GEMS charity, a scar therapist and a physiotherapist, and danced with the Rosen method movement.

Do I have to share my experiences?

There is no pressure to share, but you will always have the opportunity to be heard. We have a shared understanding of what you may be going through but will never judge or offer medical advice. It may feel tough walking through the door for the first time, but you are not alone as we have all done it too and we are there to support you.

Do I have to commit to come each month?

No, we understand that you may have times when you can’t make the group, or don’t fancy the activity. We only ask for commitment at sessions where we are providing food, to ensure that we have plenty for everyone.

How can I help?

We are always looking for new ideas for the group, so if you have a special skill or experience that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you! If you like baking, we always have cake on offer for our members, so please let us know if you can help with that!

How can I find out more?

Email us at thenewnormal.leicester@gmail.com or find us on Socials.

Or just come along and see for yourself! We can’t wait to meet you!
