Duggie’s Ramblings
I had not heard the phrase ‘Christmas creep’ until recently in a TV programme about current affairs, a matter of weeks not days ago. Then I looked around in the shops and adverts on the TV: it was mid/late November; Christmas was 30 plus days away! And in anticipation of Christmas, the festivities had begun, inviting family and friends in a cheerful, colourful way to go out and buy presents and seasonal food and avoid disappointment and empty stockings for Santa to fill!
A few days ago, at the Square in Kibworth, I spoke to one of a group of young girls off for the evening to celebrate in a Birmingham night club.I asked her what she was being given by her immediate family for Christmas – a Lego box-£200! Was this in her Christmas wish list, or Secret Santa! Expensive tastes.
In our family (six adults, not so adult) we have agreed to abandon Secret Santa. Hurrah! And not in the true spirit of Christmas.
It is a time of the year when most of us – even Scrooge- are generous at least more so than at other times of the year. For some, it is not a time of rejoicing for a number of reasons: some are at work or on call; some have memories but no one to share them.
We receive through the letter box, letters asking for donations so that people will receive or share, so they have not been forgotten. The Salvation Army is aware of these people and does all in its power and finances to celebrate Christmas for all.
We have, as many do, a wreath outside our door. Why? It is a symbol of victory!
