Leicester Hockey Club: a Hidden Secret?
Did you know that South Leicestershire’s premier hockey club is right on your doorstep and looking for new members of all ages?
Leicester Hockey Club was founded in 1885 and we used to play on a grass pitch at Illston-on-the-Hill. We now enjoy the magnificent astroturf facilities at Leicester Grammar School in Great Glen.
Hockey is a very inclusive team sport. We cater for both male and female players from age 6 to about age 80. If anyone thinks that it’s just a sport played by girls at school on a muddy grass pitch (and yes, we still hear that), please come along to a training session, and find out the truth about what a fast-paced and exciting sport it is.
There are lots of transferable skills from football and cricket. If you have played either and fancy a new challenge, then we can pretty much guarantee that you’ll take to hockey. We shall be delighted to lend you a stick and provide some coaching.
So, if there are any adult football or cricket teams, (men’s or women’s), who fancy a cross-sport challenge, we can arrange a coaching session, play a match, and then switch sports, so that you can show us how to play football properly.
Training & Leagues
We currently offer mid-week training and run four men’s and three women’s league teams on a Saturday. There’s also mixed hockey and have intra-club games. So there is plenty of choice on when to play, and no obligation to be available every week of the season. We also run a variety of social events for members.
If you want to progress in the sport, there are representative teams locally up to the Over 65 category. Nationally, it goes up to Over 80!
Coaching starts with the Under 8s, (boys and girls), and continues up to adult level. We are very proud of our youth development. 4 of our ‘graduates’ are playing for Great Britain at senior or under 21 level.
