Towards the end of last year, I took over compiling the Notice Board for the Kibworth & District Chronicle, and was immediately struck by the incredible number of events and activities on offer within our distribution area.

During December alone, for example, I could have visited several Christmas Tree Festivals and Fayres, listened to jazz, brass and carols, watched films, attended book and tabletop sales, shared soup and cake, dropped in to a handful of support groups and enjoyed several Christmas church services! Not to mention the many special interest groups that laid on events for their members.

We are very lucky to live in a community where so much is available on our doorsteps, usually at little cost, and often free! Almost all of the events we list on the Notice Board are submitted by voluntary groups, and organised by people who give up their own time to provide a service or entertainment for the villages.

It goes without saying how fortunate we are to have so many community-spirited people amongst us. Many of these are unknown to us and are quietly committed to their cause, be it for our children, for our health, for fundraising, or for our entertainment.

We could all make a conscious effort to support these events, and perhaps take a few minutes to think about how we can help in other ways? My guess is that almost all of the groups would welcome more volunteers with open arms! Lots of them have been championing their cause for many years, and if we want to continue to have such a variety of activities available, it’s up to us to make sure they can continue for the next generation.

Volunteering is extremely rewarding and a really great way of meeting people. So if you can spare a little time, why not make 2025 the year you take on a new challenge! You definitely won’t regret it!
