Illston Parish Estate Clerk Retires

John Tillotson, a retired Solicitor, has retired as Clerk to Illston Parish Estate (otherwise known as lllston Town Land Charity) with effect from 31 December after holding the position for an astonishing 56 years. John was appointed in 1968, the year of his marriage, by trustees chaired by the late Lord Hazlerigg when he was a Partner at Wartnaby Solicitors of Market Harborough. During his retirement he has worked from home.

At the AGM on Wednesday 20 November the Chairman, David Pease, thanked John for his remarkable service and for the dedication and expertise he has applied to the position. John was presented with a book of his choice. ‘Unleashed’ by Boris Johnson plus two bottles of vintage Burgundy for Christmas! He will be succeeded by Mrs Sandra Garvey of Kibworth Beauchamp also a Solicitor.

The Charity was first formed in 1838 with a bequest of property by the Palmer family to local trustees to benefit the residents of the Parish of Illston. The funds were to go towards mending and repairing the highways in Illston and paying other taxes including sewerage and drainage rates. Its endowment consists of 32.270 acres of let land at Illston and a portfolio of investments. The charity now makes annual grants to the Parishioners of Illston to defray their Council tax under Schemes of 13 October 1967 and 18 June 2001.There are six trustees three co-opted serving for five years and three nominated by the Parish Council serving for four years, who may but need not be, members of the Council.
