Local History Season

Starting this month in Kibworth Community Library

As we know from Michael Wood’s Story of England, Kibworth itself dates back to the time of the Romans. The villages and the area around us are steeped in history, so we are delighted to introduce a new series of talks in the library covering a variety of historical topics.

So far, there are four planned, with more coming soon.

Thursday 30 January – doors open at 11:45am for a 12 noon start. Kibworth Harcourt Post Mill – Past and Present – by Graham Watts, local volunteer.

Come along to hear all about the fascinating story of this 300-year-old post mill – the only one remaining in Leicestershire.

Thursday 27 February – doors open at 11:45am for a 12 noon start. Foxton Locks – by Marie-Anne Beere and Jane MacDonald of the Canal & River Trust.

Dating back to 1814, these locks have seen times change dramatically during their lifetime.

Tuesday 18 March – evening talkdoors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Kibworth & the Black Death – by Julie Harrison (former Medical Microbiologist)

The Black Death arrived in Kibworth in April 1349. Hear about the worst plague to spread across the world and how Kibworth was impacted by it.

Thursday 27 March – doors open at 11:45am for 12 noon start. A History of Market Harborough – by David Holmes, The Historical Society.

Founded by the Saxons in 410AD, Market Harborough has come a long way from a small village to the thriving market town it is today.

Tickets for all of these events are on sale now for £6 and include refreshments. These will be coffee, tea and savoury snacks for our lunchtime talks, and a glass of wine, or a soft drink, and snacks for the evening one.
