The Shipping Forecast

Anyone listening to BBC Radio 4 on New Year’s Day would have been treated to a day of pure poetry. The ‘national treasure’ that is The Shipping Forecast or programme about The Shipping Forecast. The days’ programmes celebrated that it had been broadcast by the BBC for exactly 100 years.

Although living in land locked Leicestershire, The Shipping Forecast still resonates with us, as we can predict the weather to come dependent on the wind direction and force.

There are 31 areas around Britain – can you name them all? The forecast apparently has between 350 and 370 words. Which word do you think is very rarely mentioned?

If you have the time, I recommend listening to Murray Lachlan Young’s poetic version of The People’s Shipping Forecast.
