Illston on the Hill WI – Feb ’25

Illston on the Hill WI invited Rev Philip Norwood to talk through the finer points of the Holy Land. This is an enormous and very complex subject.

The Holy Land, a region significant to Judaism, Christianity and Islam generally encompasses modern day Israel, the Palestinian territories (Gaza Strip and West Bank) and parts of neighbouring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Centuries of religious and political conflict have shaped this area.

The Gaza Strip, governed by Hamas since 2007, with Israel controlling its borders, airspace and coastline and Egypt overseeing its southern border is a densely populated Palestinian territory on the Mediterranean coast.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 (not internationally recognised). Syria claims it as occupied territory. It is a strategically important plateau near Israel, Syria and Lebanon.

West Bank is under partial control of the Palestinian Authority with Israel overseeing large parts, including settlements. It is a key area in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and located west of the Jordan River.

Jerusalem is claimed as a capital by both Israel and Palestinians, and its status is a major point of contention.

These areas are central to ongoing regional disputes and international negotiations.

It was a most informative and interesting talk, but left many of us still confused about all the various territories. The situation is fluid and control over these areas remains contentious and sensitive in international politics.

We ended on a more light-hearted matter of delicious cakes and tea.

Before our meeting began we had a moments silence in respect of our very dear friend and long-standing member, Viv Robertson, who passed away on New Year’s Eve. She will be sadly missed and our sympathies go out to Neil and all the family.
