Letter to the Editor – Julie Fagan – Mar ’25

Dear Editor

Am I my brother’s keeper?

I was sad to read the honest contribution ‘An alternative view on climate change’, saying no to Net Zero. It’s true we can do that, but for the sake, not only of ourselves, our children and grandchildren but because of the people in the global majority world, rapidly changing weather patterns are making life ever more difficult. Drought, famine and floods have caused mass migrations and their huge attendant problems.

It’s the age-old question from the book of Genesis, after Cain murdered his brother Abel – am I my brother’s keeper? Even our own farmers are now being impacted by the more frequent droughts or heavy rain and flooding, which in turn is affecting food supplies. Can we afford to ignore Net Zero, as the gas and oil companies increasingly do, to improve their profit margins, to the delight of their shareholders? I prefer the maxim accredited to Mahatma Gandhi, ‘live simply that others may simply live’.
