Wine Note

Spier Stellenbosch Albariño 2022/23 (Majestic £9.99).
Is South African wine ‘old world’ or ‘new world’? It’s ‘old’ because many of the vineyards were established in the 17th century; Spier was founded in 1692.
It’s ‘new’ because the industry is still expanding into new areas and planting grape varieties new to the country.
Albariño comes from Galicia in Northwest Spain where, because it retains its acidity in the heat, it’s the classic accompaniment to seafood.
Ten years ago, it was introduced to South Africa but still only 36 ha have been planted. Bottle prices until now have not been low (£17 to £27) but this wine, at less than £10 in a Majestic Mix 6 deal, may be just what South African Albariño needs to take off.
It’s got minerality and an excellent fruit/acid balance, making it ideal for drinking with shellfish. It’s also quite rich on the palate with flavours of stone fruits so it will go with weightier fish dishes.
Spier have only 9 ha planted with the variety, so there aren’t many bottles out there. It has been awarded a Gold Medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards and it’s available in Market Harborough for less than a tenner. It’s a bargain.
