Moving House….

A Rollercoaster of Boxes, Emotions and Gratitude.

The Coombes family is on the move—just a few miles down the road (rest assured—the clinic stays put!). But distance doesn’t dampen the stress of a house move, whether it’s five miles or 500!

Moving is a major stressor, an emotional rollercoaster from the moment you decide to sell. I’ve felt it all: nerves, excitement, frustration, confusion, and a huge sense of gratitude.

First, preparing our home for sale was a hurdle. Transforming our busy family house into a show home involved lots of cleaning, tidying, and garden prep. Grouping house viewings on the same day eased the chaos. Walking the dog during viewings offered a mental reset (the cats were unfazed!).

Finding our next home had its highs and lows. Despite staying local, a survey ruled out our initial choice, requiring emotional navigation. Maintaining my morning routine—running, Pilates, and journaling—kept me grounded amidst uncertainty.

Then, once our offer was accepted, the paperwork flooded in from estate agents, mortgage brokers, and solicitors. My top tip: tackle it on a computer or with pen and paper, not your phone, and take hourly breaks to avoid burnout.

We opted for DIY packing, a cathartic experience and a chance for a clear-out. Packing ourselves meant protecting our backs, using smaller boxes for heavy items, and lifting correctly.

Unpacking

Unpacking held surprises. Not everything fits as expected, leading to being overwhelmed. My advice? Take your time, stretch, breathe deeply, and celebrate small wins.

Moving house is stressful, yes, but it’s also a reminder of our capabilities. Through structure, movement, and support, I’ve learned to function in chaos and that asking for help is a strength.
