Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec 2022

(Tesco £16/£13.50/£10.13)

Buying Malbec at Tesco is a complex process but, if you do your homework, you can find a bargain such as this one, Trivento’s Golden Reserve.

First, there are twenty-five different bottles to choose from. Next, depending on when you shop, there are up to three different prices for each wine: Ten of them may have three prices – ‘normal’, with club card, and with 25% off for six with club card.

Thirteen of them may have two prices – ‘normal’, with 25% off for six.

Two have just one price – ‘normal’ (the ones costing less than £6; even Tesco can’t justify any discounting).

You won’t need AI to work out that the way to get the lowest price is to select those wines that have club card + 25% off discounts.

But you must get your timing right; 25% off doesn’t happen every day. Your next opportunity is the period between Tuesday 8 April and Easter Monday 21 April.

But which Malbec to choose?

The Trivento wine looks expensive. The label emphasises the golden theme with its luxurious lettering and pictures of awards. That’s rarely a good sign (the greatest wines usually have the simplest labels) but in this case, the wine thoroughly deserves its medals.

It has a great balance between the plum/cherry fruit and the acid and tannin. It will go well with red meat, especially lamb, but also with grilled and roasted vegetables.

Happy Easter
