In the USA, on 5 December 1933, Prohibition was repealed. That same year Ernest and Julio Gallo founded their family business in Modesto, California.

Bordeaux produces great red and dry white wines. Its magnificent sweet white wines, however, tend to be overlooked. Such wines have become unfashionable as low alcohol, dry wines are better aligned with health conscious times. Perhaps also dessert wines lack an obvious place in our fast food/quick meal culture.

In 1974 I remember buying a bottle of the world’s greatest Chardonnay, Montrachet, for £5 (reduced from £8 thanks to the oil crisis). Adjusted for inflation over 50 years, that’s £65 reduced from £104.
