Duggie's Ramblings

22nd May 2023 | Letters

2023 is the 25the anniversary of the Good Friday agreement between the Irish Republican Government and the British Government. It brought peace to Northern Ireland and an end to the long held claim of the British government to sovereignty of all Ireland. The agreement was brokered by the United States senator for Maine, Senator George Mitchell, sent for this specific purpose by President Bill Clinton. Later, back in the United States, Senator Mitchell was awarded the Liberty Medal. He made a speech which included these words. 'I believe there is no such thing as a conflict that cannot be ended. They're created and sustained by human beings. They can be ended by human beings. No matter how ancient the conflict, no matter how hateful, no matter how hurtful, peace can prevail. ’A hopeful message

My 1953 Coronation Memory

22nd May 2023 | Letters

At the last coronation I was just five years and ten months old. I lived with my parents on a brand new gigantic council house estate. The gardens were marked out with regularly placed concrete posts with strong wire going between the uprights. There were small plants growing beneath the lowest wire. I stood in my garden and said to my neighbour, a girl aged nearly five, over the fence in the adjoining garden, “I bet you, you can’t throw that large stone.” She promptly picked up the nearest boulder without hesitation and tossed the stone towards me. It duly hit me in the face causing my nose to start bleeding. I spent the afternoon of 6 June 1953 perched over a white enamel bucket in the kitchen of the house of the little girl, trying to stop the blood pouring out whilst my members of my family watched the Coronation on the small 9inch television in the living room. I wasn’t allowed to watch for fear of blood getting onto the carpet.

Duggie's Ramblings

20th February 2023 | Letters

Netflix provides a wide variety of entertaining films or movies at an acceptable cost. I think we pay £5 per month. Recently, we scrolled through the choices, not knowing where to settle. Eventually, impatience took over from indecisiveness and the film -timely as it turned out -'Bank of Dave' was agreed upon. What a worthwhile choice it turned out to be, starring Rory Kinnear; Hugh Bonneville and Phoebe Dynevor. Dave Fishwick had accumulated a large sum of money running his business in Burnley. He is later persuaded to open a bank in his name in his hometown of Burnley (this is fact.)

Duggie's Ramblings - January 2023

23rd January 2023 | Letters, People

This year 2023, there is a Diamond Jubilee celebration-in June (early notification!) What is the reason? It is the 75th anniversary of the first arrival of the Windrush generation from the West Indies; so named because the first newcomers travelled to the United Kingdom by sea aboard HMT (His Majesty's Transport) Windrush; they were invited to come and settle, by the then Labour government, for there were many employment vacancies. The year was 1948; they continued to come under this government scheme until 1951. To meet the requirements of the post war recovery, particularly, the needs of the newly created NHS adults and children travelled on one passport. The Second World War in Europe had only ended in May 1945.
