Farming: This month's tasks

Without question we live in a beautiful part of the world surrounded by countryside and are fortunate enough to have some very thoughtful famers on our doorstep. The Chronicle has asked a local farmer what tasks they have been doing over the last month while the sun shone. This report is from Jill Vickers at Bridge 67 and we thank her for this list. The bullet points are because farmers are busy and they don’t get bank holidays off! As you move around one can only hope that part of our food security is in safe hands.

Looking back at June, we enjoyed an excellent, well-prepared talk about ‘The Life of Marilyn Monroe’ by Julie Kinnear. Affected by her unfortunate early life, Marilyn was constantly trying to improve herself. She never felt that she was beautiful, or particularly good enough. Paradoxically, when working as a model, and later in the film industry, she was constantly exploited for her looks.

Handel’s Messiah report

Sixty-five singers from choirs across Leicester and Leicestershire, the Knighton Chamber Orchestra and four soloists, former Leicester University students, were conducted by Dr. Paul Jenkins. The audience in the almost full church were mesmerised by the beauty and volume of the music, which resonated outside to nearby residents.

Ilston Open Gardens

Like the sun, which gloriously greeted the Illston Open Gardeners on that Saturday morning of April 30th, the generosity of the British public who came out in their droves to visit our gardens also shone through. We collected in excess of £3000, and counting, for the Ukraine Appeal! This is an excellent result from a relatively small village of only 40 houses.

GEMS Charity would like to thank Paul Ward of Kibworth Carpets. He and his family gave a kind donation of £719.01 in memory of Claire Ward. The online donations for which have yet to be received. This is a great amount, which goes to show how much loved Claire was.

Fun tennis sessions at the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations taking place on Smeeton Road Recreation Ground on Sunday 5 June, Kibworth Tennis Club ran free fun tennis sessions for children and adults. It was a great opportunity for children and adults to try tennis, some for the first time. Over 45 children and adults joined in the sessions and all had a good time!
