On 3rd May 1926, Britain’s miners went on strike, and workers from other industries joined them in solidarity. This was the first general strike in Britain, with 1.5 million strikers by 4th May.

Having lived, walked and run around the countryside of Kibworth and Smeeton Westerby for most of my life, it has taken nearly 40 years to return to a passion that began at school – drawing and painting.

The Harborough Collective directed by David Le Page will be performing a concert at St Wilfrid’s Church, Kibworth on Friday 27 March. The concert, scheduled to begin at 7pm, will feature Vaughan Williams ‘The Lark Ascending’, Holst ‘Brook Green Suite’, Le Page ‘A Kibworth Idyll’, Nick Drake ‘River Man’, Sting ‘Fields of Gold’, Elgar ‘Chanson de Matin & Nuit’, and Purcell ‘Remember Me’.

In February, Year 1 enjoyed a truly special afternoon sharing old toys with their grandparents. The children were captivated by the stories behind the toys and discovered fascinating insights into how games and play have changed over time.

In the closing paragraphs of D H Lawrence’s novel, ‘Sons and Lovers’ the protagonist Paul Morel thinks of himself as ‘one tiny upright speck of flesh, less than an ear of wheat lost in the field.’ The image has stuck in my mind, because for me anyway it gives me a sense of perspective. While it’s easy to think of oneself as the centre of things – that the whole world revolves around me – in fact I am just a tiny component in what might be an infinite universe. It’s humbling.

As you read this we will officially be in spring. It has been an unusual winter, following a bountiful autumn.
